I just asked for a label after five years

I feel like a total idiot right now. We have been seeing each other for over five years, and I just kept telling myself she would change her mind eventually if I was just patient enough. Last night we were just sat on the sofa watching tv, and I finally just said the word label out loud. I asked if we were ever going to be more than this, or if we were just going to stay in the exact same spot forever. She just looked at me and said she was not ready, which is exactly what she has said every time we have had this conversation since we started. I am mostly just angry at myself because I knew exactly what she was going to say before the words even left my mouth. I keep choosing to stay here and wait for something that is never going to happen. It is my own fault for thinking that my optimism was actually going to make a difference this time. I am sitting here staring at my phone and feeling embarrassed for even bringing it up again. I know I should just walk away but I honestly do not know how to start.

i honestly feel you. five years is a long time to keep holding your breath. reading this made my chest hurt because i am doing the exact same thing right now.
I don't think asking was embarrassing. But if she's genuinely given you the same answer for five years, I also don't think asking it a sixth way is going to produce clarity you don't already have. The difficult bit now is deciding what you do with her answer.
five years is a massive waste of your life, walk away now.
i have to ask, what exactly were you guys doing for five years then if not dating? do you go on actual dates or is it just sitting on the sofa watching tv like you mentioned?
I think the useful question is no longer whether she might change her mind. It's whether this situationship, exactly as she has described it for five years, is something you would knowingly choose for another five. That answer belongs to you, not her.
im sorry, that sounds proper rubbish. please try to put yourself first for once.
stop overthinking it and just spend this weekend away from your phone and her. go stay with a mate or take a long walk without checking to see if she has messaged. you need some physical distance to break the cycle.
get out now, you are being used.
this actually made me cry because i am in year four and reading this felt like staring in a mirror. im so sorry you are going through this. i wish i had the strength to walk out the door like everyone says i should.
stop acting like she trapped you. you stayed for five years because you wanted to, not because she made you. own your choices instead of whining on the internet about it.
It sounds as though this situation has worn you down. That does not make you foolish or weak, but it may help to focus on the choices available to you now and the boundary you can realistically keep.
did she actually stop the show or did she just keep staring at the screen while she told you that? i need to know if she had the decency to even look at you properly.
i feel this so much. sitting in the exact same spot and just waiting for a change that never comes. it is exhausting.
same here mate. feels like im just stuck in a loop.
stop blaming your optimism when its really just a lack of self respect. you stayed because it was comfortable, not because you were waiting for a change. stop whining about it online and just leave.
five years is far too long to be waiting for someone to finally see your worth, you deserve so much better than this.
stop looking for sympathy online when you are the one keeping yourself in this cage. five years of your own choice, so stop moaning and just get a grip, mate.
leave her, you deserve so much more than this.
im sorry, that sounds rubbish. honestly, you just need to put your own happiness first for once.
Im sorry, that sounds rubbish. Hope you find a way to move on soon.
Look, I think you are being a bit unfair to her. You have been together for five years, so you obviously knew her stance from the start. You cant force someone to change their mind just because you decided it was your turn for a label. She has been honest with you the whole time.

The difficult part is that you cannot control whether they change, only whether you stay in the same arrangement. That does not mean you deserved the way you were treated or that struggling to leave makes you weak. Try to focus on one boundary you can actually keep today.
Tbh I think you are being pretty unfair to the girl. She has been crystal clear for years. You are the one who kept hanging around hoping for a miracle that was never coming. She is not the villain here just because you changed your mind about the rules.

you deserve so much more than a sofa companion who just uses you.
i am at year three and this just hit way too close to home. honestly, same.
i have to ask, does she ever invite you out to see her mates or are you strictly a sofa secret? that seems like a massive red flag to me.
im sorry, that sounds rubbish. you really need to get out of there for your own sake.
five years is a bloody joke, mate. honestly, stop waiting for a miracle and just bin the whole thing off before you waste another decade on someone who clearly doesnt give a damn.
