Understanding the grey zone

What is a situationship?

It looks like a relationship. It feels like a relationship, sometimes. But it has no name, no plans past next weekend, and no answer to the question "what are we?" That's the grey zone. And if you're in it, you already know.

Made by two people

We refuse to believe one side is all bad. A situationship is a relationship made by two people: one person wants more, whether that is a label, a future or a place in the other's life. The other says they're not ready, or not willing, to give it. Neither of them set out to hurt anyone. But undefined doesn't mean cost-free. It means the cost is hidden, and it's rarely shared equally.

The signs

  • You've never had a clear conversation about what you are to each other.
  • Plans are last-minute; the future is a subject that gets changed.
  • You act like a couple in private, but not in public.
  • Their friends and family don't really know who you are.
  • You check your phone more than you'd like, waiting to hear from them.
  • You've stayed longer than you meant to, because leaving feels harder than staying.

Why the grey zone is so comfortable

For the person who doesn't want a label, the grey zone offers everything a relationship gives, like companionship, intimacy and someone who shows up, with none of the exposure of commitment. That's not evil. It's human. But "not ready" is only okay for a while. Not ready with no end in sight isn't caution. It's a decision that hasn't been said out loud.

The cost

For the person who wants more, every undefined month costs something real: the chance to plan a future, the confidence to name their needs, and often their sense of what those needs even are. If you love someone, commit to them. If you care about them but know you never will, the kindest thing you can do is say so, clearly, and let them go.
