Five years and I was left to recover alone

I need to get this off my chest because I am still shaking. We have been seeing each other for over five years now. It has always been this weird middle ground where we act like a couple but never use the word. Anyway, I got really sick last week and ended up in hospital for a few days. I texted them when I was admitted (sorry this is long) and just expected them to turn up or at least check in. They never came. Not once. I sat in that ward feeling like a complete fool because I had been there for every single one of their problems for years. Whenever they had a meltdown or needed someone to fix things, I was always the first person they called. But when it was my turn to be the one who needed help, they just sent one text saying they were busy with work and needed space. It really hit me then. I have spent half a decade making sure they were okay, but I am basically invisible when things get real. I came home yesterday to an empty flat and realised I have absolutely no idea why I have been putting up with this. Tb, I feel sick thinking about all the time I have wasted on someone who does not care if I am actually okay or not. I just needed to write this down.

Be honest. Be kind. No real names.

delete their number right now and block them on everything so you dont get sucked back in. you need a proper clean break to start healing, otherwise you will just be checking your phone waiting for a text that is never coming.
literally same. sat here waiting for a text back while they are out living their best life. it hurts so much.
Their behaviour may have been hurtful, but the most useful question is whether the relationship they are offering is one you genuinely want. You do not need to condemn them in order to decide it is not enough for you.
I can understand why the other person may feel hurt by the uncertainty. That does not make either of you a bad person, but continuing without a clear and honest conversation is likely to cause more pain.
bin them off mate, five years is way too long to be treated like a ghost.
honestly mate, just cut the cord because you deserve way more than that.
leave now, you have wasted five years already so dont throw away any more.
The hospital part is the thing I’d focus on, not whether you can prove they care or don’t care. After five years, you found out what support actually looked like when you genuinely needed it, and it was nowhere near what you thought the relationship contained. I’d be hurt too.
Have you two ever actually talked about what you expect from each other in an emergency? I’m not excusing them not coming. I just wonder whether the five years of you being the fixer meant you both quietly built very different ideas of what this connection was supposed to require.

Being left alone in hospital after five years would change how I saw the relationship too. You were not asking for a grand gesture; you needed ordinary care at a vulnerable time.
The difficult part is that you cannot control whether they change, only whether you stay in the same arrangement. That does not mean you deserved the way you were treated or that struggling to leave makes you weak. Try to focus on one boundary you can actually keep today.
It sounds as though this situation has worn you down. That does not make you foolish or weak, but it may help to focus on the choices available to you now and the boundary you can realistically keep.

i am so sorry you had to go through that alone. you deserve so much better than being treated like an afterthought when you are poorly.
Serious question: did you receive any reply after saying you were in hospital, or was the message about work and needing space the only response before they went quiet?
The hospital experience gave you specific information about the support available in this relationship. You do not have to prove that they never cared before deciding that what happened when you needed help was not enough.
Five years of being the person who handled their crises makes the absence during your hospital stay especially painful. I would focus on that imbalance rather than turning either of you into a caricature.
When you got home, did you directly tell them how their absence during the hospital stay affected you, or had the message about work and needing space already answered the question for you?
Work stress may explain why somebody has limited capacity, but it does not settle whether this relationship gives you the mutual care you need. Their reason and the impact on you can both matter.
The hospital experience sounds like important evidence about what happens when you need support. You do not have to decide everything today, but I would not minimise what it showed you.
