The Drifter

You never chose this. That's exactly the problem.

You didn't choose the grey zone, you drifted into it. Rocking the boat feels risky, so you go along with how things are, telling yourself it's fine, it's casual, it's fine. Somewhere along the way, 'seeing where it goes' became the destination.

You might be The Drifter if…

  • •You genuinely don't know what you want, and haven't sat still long enough to find out.
  • •You'd rather keep things pleasant than have one uncomfortable conversation.
  • •You describe the relationship as 'easy' more often than 'good'.
  • •You've never initiated a define-the-relationship talk in your life.
  • •If it ended tomorrow you'd feel relief and sadness in roughly equal measure.

The psychology behind it

Relationship researchers call this sliding rather than deciding: couples slide through milestones like sleeping over, meeting friends and months passing, without ever making an explicit choice. Inertia then keeps them there, because the accumulated convenience of a relationship makes leaving harder than staying, regardless of whether it's right. Conflict avoidance does the rest: every conversation you don't have is a decision you've made by default.

Why you stay

Because staying requires nothing. Deciding requires risking the relationship, and disappointing someone, and being the one who caused the change. Drifting lets you avoid all three, while quietly costing you both years.

The attachment style behind it

Often dismissive-avoidant or a low-conflict secure-leaning style where independence has never really been tested.

What actually helps

  • •Ask yourself the only question that matters: if nothing changed for two more years, would that be okay?
  • •Practise having one small uncomfortable conversation a week, so the big one feels survivable.
  • •Write down what you want, not what you'd accept. There's a difference.
  • •Understand that 'I haven't decided' reads to the other person as 'no' with extra steps.

The hard truth

Not deciding is a decision. You're just letting someone else absorb the cost of it.

A gentle truth

Going with the flow is easy, until you look up and realise the current chose your direction for you. You're allowed to steer. You're allowed to want something on purpose.

The Avoidant

You're not cold. You're protecting yourself, and it's costing them.
