I thought calm meant there was no spark

I’m 33 and I’ve been seeing a woman for six months. Nothing is wrong, which has been surprisingly difficult to get used to. Before her, I spent nearly two years involved with someone who could be intensely close for a weekend and then disappear for days. I was always waiting for a message, a cancellation or the next conversation about what we were. When it was good, it felt enormous. This relationship does not feel enormous. She says when she is free and then turns up. If she is busy, she tells me. We usually make plans a week ahead. I have met her friends and she has met mine. Three months ago she asked if I wanted us to be exclusive, I said yes, and neither of us acted as though the question had ruined the atmosphere. For the first few months I kept wondering whether the chemistry was missing. There were no dramatic reunions because she had not vanished. I did not get the rush of seeing her name after staring at a silent phone all day. If we had a disagreement, she wanted to discuss it before bed instead of leaving me to decode three days of distance. Once, she cancelled dinner because her mother needed help. She rang me, explained and suggested another evening. I still spent an hour thinking this was the beginning of her pulling away. It was not. We went out two nights later. I nearly ended things in May. I told her I liked her but worried that something felt flat. She was hurt, but asked what I meant. The embarrassing answer was that I could not identify anything I wanted that was absent. I just did not feel constantly alert. She said she was not interested in auditioning for the role of someone unpredictable enough to keep me excited. Fair. I asked for a little time rather than ending it that evening. Not time for her to persuade me. Time for me to notice the actual relationship without comparing every feeling to the last one. I started paying attention to different things. How much I laughed when I was not busy analysing her. How easy it was to tell her I needed an evening alone. The fact that I could make plans with friends without keeping the weekend available in case she suddenly wanted me. There is chemistry. It just has room around it. Last month we went away for two nights. The train was delayed, the hotel room was too hot and neither of us transformed into a different person under minor stress. We complained, found a pub and had a genuinely lovely time. I do not know whether this relationship will last forever. Six months is six months. I am also not claiming that every calm person is automatically compatible or that anxiety proves a relationship is bad. I just know I had become so used to relief feeling like love that steadiness initially registered as absence. Yesterday she left a spare toothbrush at mine. No speech, no symbolic moment. She put it in the cup and asked if I wanted tea. I did.
