I agreed to be her friend in public. I didn’t know how much it would hurt
I’m 28 and I have been seeing a woman for eight months. In private, she calls me her girlfriend. Most of her friends know about us. Her parents do not.
She told me this on our third date. Her family is religious, she still depends on them for some things and coming out is not a simple conversation she can have without consequences. I said I understood.
At first, I genuinely did.
We had our own life. I met her friends, she met mine and we went away for a long weekend in June. I did not need a photograph on her mum’s mantelpiece to believe the relationship was real.
The problem is that the private and public versions of us have started overlapping.
Last weekend was her sister’s thirtieth birthday. Her girlfriend asked whether I would come because “everyone important” was going to be there. I checked twice what the story was and she said I would be introduced as a friend from work. I agreed.
Her parents were warm to me. Her mum kept moving me closer to the family photos and made sure I had enough food. My girlfriend sat beside me and held my hand under the table where nobody could see.
Then her aunt asked whether she was seeing anyone.
She said no.
I knew that was the answer we had agreed on. It still felt like somebody had removed me from the room while I was sitting in it.
I went quiet and left early. On the way home she messaged that she was sorry the question had come up, but she also said I had known what the situation was before I came. Both things are true.
We spoke on Sunday. I told her I am not asking her to come out before she is safe or ready. I also said I cannot keep attending family events as a colleague while privately being asked to behave like a partner. She heard that as me giving her an ultimatum about her family. I meant it as a boundary about where I will place myself.
There is no obvious villain here. She has real reasons for protecting this part of her life. I agreed to the arrangement with open eyes.
I just do not think agreeing once means I have to remain comfortable forever.
For now, I have said no more family events and no more hidden hand-holding. We can either have a relationship that stays separate from her family, with both of us honest about what that costs, or decide that the cost has become too high for me. I am angry that this is where we are, but I am done pretending the private version automatically cancels out the public one.
