# We're basically a couple until I call us one

I want more 1–2 years 30+ Woman & Non-binary

Two years. They sleep at my place three or four nights a week. We have groceries we both buy. There's a charger on their side of my bed. My neighbours know them. We have a stupid Sunday routine involving coffee and the crossword. If I describe our life without saying what we are, everyone assumes we're a couple. But if I call them my partner, they correct me. Last night I asked what the actual difference would be between what we're doing now and being in a relationship. They said, "Expectations." I asked which expectations. They couldn't really answer. Eventually they said they don't want to feel responsible for somebody else's happiness. I don't think I've ever asked them to be responsible for mine. I want to be able to book Christmas without wondering whether mentioning December is going to make them disappear for a week. I think I've spent two years trying to prove I can be close to them without requiring anything from them. Has anyone actually managed to move from this kind of setup into a relationship, or does the fact that the label itself scares them tell me everything I need to know?

It sounds as though this situation has worn you down. That does not make you foolish or weak, but it may help to focus on the choices available to you now and the boundary you can realistically keep.

I can understand why the other person may feel hurt by the uncertainty. That does not make either of you a bad person, but continuing without a clear and honest conversation is likely to cause more pain.

Can I just ask, when they went quiet and stared at the wall, did they actually look guilty or were they just completely blank? Sounds like they checked out ages ago.

i am in the exact same spot and reading this feels like a punch to the gut. i keep thinking maybe tomorrow they will wake up and just get it. its been a year of waiting and i honestly have no idea how to leave.

lost_in_the_void (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/lost_in_the_void)20 Aug 2026, 08:44

reading this is literally like looking in a mirror. i keep telling myself that if i am just a bit cooler and less demanding, they will eventually see what is right in front of them. stuck in the exact same loop and have no idea how to get out.

This hit so hard. I was in a similar boat for four years and I remember that exact feeling of just waiting for a sign that never appeared. It broke my heart when he just walked out the door like it was nothing. You deserve so much better than being treated like a background character in your own life.

truthbomb88 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/truthbomb88)15 Aug 2026, 00:44

get out of there mate, you are wasting your life on someone who clearly does not value you.

just_a_lurker (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/just_a_lurker)15 Aug 2026, 08:00

im sorry, that sounds rubbish. honestly, you deserve someone who actually wants to be there with you.

honest_observer (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/honest_observer)15 Aug 2026, 14:28

i dont know, sounds like you ambushed them on the sofa. you have been seeing each other for two years and you just drop this bomb? no wonder they went quiet, you probably scared them off with the pressure.

nosyneighbour (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/nosyneighbour)15 Aug 2026, 16:38

did they actually finish the dinner you cooked before they went all silent, or did they just push it away? that bit actually makes a huge difference.

bumbles_along (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/bumbles_along)15 Aug 2026, 18:14

i feel u. u deserve to be happy honestly. dont beat urself up so much over it, sometimes people r just weird and not ready and it has nothing to do with how amazing u are. just take a breathe and do something for u today, even if its just buying a nice coffee or something. u will be okay.

ghostedbytheghost (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/ghostedbytheghost)21 Aug 2026, 04:22

wait, do they actually keep their stuff at yours or just leave a mess and disappear? if they have a drawer, they are lying about the commitment part.

londonfog99 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/londonfog99)21 Aug 2026, 14:37

im sorry, that sounds rubbish. you really deserve someone who doesnt make you feel like a guest in your own life.

stuckinloop (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/stuckinloop)16 Aug 2026, 03:16

honestly same. im three years deep and this made me feel so seen. i dont have any answers for u because i am still sat here waiting for the same sign. it is just exhausting.

daz_w_the_coffee (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/daz_w_the_coffee)21 Aug 2026, 01:20

mate i been there and honestly its just a big game to them. they love having u around for the cosy bits but as soon as you want proper commitment they just run. cut your losses and block them, you will feel so much better.

bitterpill (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/bitterpill)17 Aug 2026, 20:23

Their behaviour may have been hurtful, but the most useful question is whether the relationship they are offering is one you genuinely want. You do not need to condemn them in order to decide it is not enough for you.

lurkerinlimbo (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/lurkerinlimbo)18 Aug 2026, 01:30

i feel this so much. four years here and i honestly think i just lost my mind somewhere along the way. no advice but u arent alone.

tellyourtruth (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/tellyourtruth)18 Aug 2026, 04:17

try going no contact for just one week. no texts and no visits. see if they actually reach out or if they just let you drift away. it is the only way to get some clarity.

tea_and_biscuits (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/tea_and_biscuits)19 Aug 2026, 02:16

im sorry, that sounds rubbish. honestly, you really deserve way more than that.

tea_spiller_99 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/tea_spiller_99)19 Aug 2026, 12:45

wait, they have their own drawer or charger but still say they dont want the responsibility? have they ever actually bought their own groceries or do you just pay for everything?

salty_dog88 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/salty_dog88)19 Aug 2026, 22:21

Honestly you are just as bad as them. You let them play house for two years while doing the shopping and waiting around like a spare part. Stop moaning about it now when you signed up for this nonsense. You have zero self respect.

direct_talker (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/direct_talker)22 Aug 2026, 03:17

get out of it, the whole situation is toxic.

bitter_ex_vibes (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/bitter_ex_vibes)22 Aug 2026, 05:52

mine did the exact same thing for four years until he dumped me for a coworker. the bloke was a total tosser. leave now before you wake up in ten years with nothing to show for it but a massive headache.

lostinclouds (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/lostinclouds)30 Aug 2026, 23:06

i feel this so hard. honestly it is just so painful when u keep waiting for a lightbulb moment that just never comes. u sound like such a good person and its not ur fault u want something solid, just dont lose urself trying to fix someone who is happy leaving u in limbo.

sad_ghost_88 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/sad_ghost_88)23 Aug 2026, 06:14

this made me proper cry. i did the exact same thing for three years and honestly it just broke me. i thought if i just made things comfy enough they would eventually see it too. they never did. i hope you find the strength to walk away sooner than i did.

truthbomb_bruv (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/truthbomb_bruv)26 Aug 2026, 05:33

honestly i think you are being a bit unfair to them. you clearly have needs they dont want to meet and instead of accepting that you keep pushing. they told you the truth about not wanting the pressure so stop making them out to be the villain.

softheart_77 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/softheart_77)26 Aug 2026, 08:44

its so hard when u just want to build something real and they treat ur life like a temp job. i spent years doing this too and it just makes u feel so small inside. honestly mate u deserve someone who isnt scared of a label.

kindredspirit_lon (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/kindredspirit_lon)26 Aug 2026, 14:02

londonlad88 (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/londonlad88)26 Aug 2026, 18:43

tbh i think you are being well harsh on them. you invited them into this routine and now you are moving the goalposts by demanding a label. they told you exactly how they feel so stop trying to trap them into something they clearly said they do not want.

truthbomb_central (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/truthbomb_central)26 Aug 2026, 22:07

stop whining. you are the one choosing to play house with someone who does not want you. you have zero self respect and you are wasting your own time. get a grip and leave.

ghostedagain (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/ghostedagain)27 Aug 2026, 02:17

dump them, you deserve way better than this breadcrumbing.

theboundarybot (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/theboundarybot)31 Aug 2026, 07:47

try staying at a friends house for the next three nights. if they start acting like everything is crumbling because u arent there to host, you will see how much they actually value the relationship versus just the convenience of your flat.

plainspokenuk (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/plainspokenuk)31 Aug 2026, 10:00

im sorry, that sounds rubbish. you really should be with someone who is proud to call you theirs.

honest_truth_teller (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/honest_truth_teller)2 Sep 2026, 16:15

Wanting clarity does not make you unreasonable. It may be worth separating what you hope the relationship could become from what the other person is consistently showing they can offer.

bitter_betty_b (https://thegreyzones.com/stories/users/bitter_betty_b)2 Sep 2026, 18:17

The difficult part is that you cannot control whether they change, only whether you stay in the same arrangement. That does not mean you deserved the way you were treated or that struggling to leave makes you weak. Try to focus on one boundary you can actually keep today.
