- I recognise the confusion of sharing ordinary couple life with someone who still refuses the word. The seaside weekend can have been real to him without meaning he wanted the future you wanted.

- Seeing his car at work would make the boundary much harder, but your example shows why keeping every exchange practical matters. A polite conversation does not have to become emotional access again.

- The question about children cannot be solved by loving each other harder. I hope you can talk about it directly, because neither person should have to surrender a whole future while pretending the loss is a compromise.

- I recognise the phone checking after seeing that somebody has moved on. What helped me was removing the easy ways to check for a while, so every difficult moment did not turn into another look.

- Honestly mate, stop punishing yourself for being human. If you really want to break this cycle, you need to write down every single time they made you feel small or ignored your needs. Put that list on your fridge. Next time you feel like unblocking, read that list out loud to yourself. It makes the reality impossible to ignore.
