### We had chemistry until we tried a Saturday afternoon

I’m 28 and I had been seeing a woman for about seven months, except almost everything between us happened after 9pm. We met in a club. After that it was drinks, gigs, late dinners, going back to one of our flats and sending each other stupid voice notes at 1am. I thought the chemistry was ridiculous. My friends thought I was in love. I probably was a bit. She always said she did not want a relationship. I kept thinking the label was the only thing missing because we had such a good time together. Last month I asked if we could spend an ordinary Saturday together. No event, no alcohol, no meeting after we had both already been out. She agreed. It was painfully awkward. She wanted to sleep until midday. I had been up since eight and wanted to go somewhere. She hated the market I suggested. I found the exhibition she chose boring. We had lunch and realised we had never discussed anything practical for longer than twenty minutes. Money, family, work, where we wanted to live. We disagreed on nearly all of it. Neither of us had done anything wrong. We just knew exactly how to have one kind of time together. That evening was fun again. We went to a bar, the music was good and suddenly the chemistry came back. That almost made it worse because I could see how easy it would be to let another seven months disappear inside the part that worked. I told her last week that I needed to stop. She said she understood, but also said she would have been happy carrying on exactly as we were. I believe her. I am sad and I miss the 1am version of us. I also wanted somebody I could spend a boring Saturday with, and it turns out that was not a small extra I could add later.
