### We could sign a five-year lease, but not call this a relationship

I’m 42 and I’ve been seeing a woman for about eighteen months. She’s a pastry chef and has talked about opening her own café since before I met her. I do bookkeeping for small businesses, so over time I became the person she sent spreadsheets to and asked about rent, margins and whether a particular unit was a terrible idea. We weren’t casual in any normal sense. We spent four nights a week together, had keys to each other’s flats and went to her sister’s birthday as a pair. But after a difficult divorce she hated labels. Whenever I asked what we were, she’d say she loved what we had and didn’t want to put pressure on it. I wanted to be her girlfriend. I also kept accepting everything except the word, so I’m not pretending I had no part in this. Three weeks ago she found a café space she really wanted. She came to mine with the details and said she could afford the deposit if I put in £18,000 and handled the accounts. Half the business would be mine. She was glowing when she said it, like this was the most romantic offer in the world. I honestly thought I had misunderstood. She would sign a five-year commercial lease with me, take my savings and work beside me every day, but she still couldn’t say we were in a relationship. She didn’t see a contradiction. To her, asking me to build the café was proof that I was her person. She said a label felt like repeating her marriage, while making something together felt chosen. I believed her. I also knew I would be miserable running a café, and even more miserable tying my money and work to someone who still wanted our relationship to remain unnamed. I said no to the business and asked her to answer the relationship question without the café standing in for it. She cried. I cried. There wasn’t a dramatic fight. She said she still couldn’t give me the word or the kind of future I meant by it. We stopped seeing each other last weekend. I’ve helped her find an accountant because I do want the café to happen, just not with my savings or my life attached to it. She thinks I rejected the way she knows how to commit. Maybe I did. But I finally understood that a huge gesture isn’t automatically the commitment you actually need.
