### I said casual. Then I saw him on a date

I’m 27, he’s 30, and we have been seeing each other for four months. I was the person who said casual. I came out of a six-year relationship last winter and genuinely did not want to become somebody’s boyfriend again. I wanted dates, sex, company and enough space that nobody was asking where this was going. He agreed. We never discussed exclusivity. He still uses the apps and so do I, although I mostly just scroll through them. The casual arrangement felt completely fine while dating other people was theoretical. On Friday I went to a wine bar with two friends and saw him at another table with a man I recognised from one of his Instagram stories. They were clearly on a date. Nothing dramatic happened. He smiled, introduced us and went back to his evening. I felt sick. My friends knew about him, so I then had to sit through the world's most awkward conversation about why I was upset when I had been the one insisting we were not together. Later that night I sent him a message saying I hoped his date had gone well. It looked polite on the screen. It was not polite and we both knew it. He called me the next morning. He did not apologise for the date. He reminded me that we had never agreed not to see other people. I said I knew, but it still felt horrible watching it happen. He asked what I wanted him to do differently. I said I did not know. That was the problem. I wanted him to tell me the other man meant nothing. I wanted him to say he would stop dating. I also felt panicked by the idea of calling this a relationship and being expected to build another whole life around somebody. He said he likes me and would be open to discussing exclusivity, but he is not going to promise it while I keep insisting that nothing between us should have expectations. He said casual cannot mean I get the freedom of being single and the security of being chosen. That was annoyingly fair. We are meeting next weekend to talk properly. He has not given me a deadline and he is not threatening to disappear. He just wants an answer that is more useful than “I don’t want a relationship, but please behave as if you are in one with me.” I still do not know whether the jealousy means I actually want a relationship with him. It might mean that. It might also mean I enjoyed being the centre of an arrangement I assumed would remain available whenever I wanted it. So I am trying to separate three questions: Do I want him? Do I want exclusivity? Do I want the responsibilities that would come with asking him for it? For the first time, I understand that those are not the same question. I thought casual meant nothing could be demanded of me. I forgot it also meant nothing was reserved for me.
