I'm not ready 6–12 months 30+ The Drifter Man & Woman

I’m 34 and I have been seeing a woman of 35 for ten months. When we met, I had recently been made redundant and was living in my brother’s spare room. I told her both of those things. I did not tell her I also had just over £9,000 on credit cards. We agreed to keep things casual. That suited me because I liked her and because “casual” meant I did not have to explain how ashamed I felt about money. Except it stopped being casual quite quickly. We saw each other three or four times a week. She met my brother. I helped her move flats. We spent Christmas Eve together because she was with her family on Christmas Day. She called me when her car would not start and I was the person who waited with her for the recovery van. She asked twice whether I wanted to be her boyfriend. Both times I said I did, but not until I was back on my feet. I thought that sounded responsible. In my head, being her boyfriend meant paying for weekends away, being ready to move in and having some evidence that my life was going forward. I was working again by then, but the salary was lower and I was still moving money between cards every month. She heard something else. She heard that she was good enough for most of my time but not good enough to choose openly. Three weeks ago she said she was going to start dating other people. Not as a threat. We had never agreed to be exclusive, and she no longer wanted to organise her life around a relationship I kept calling temporary. I was furious for about an hour, which was embarrassing because the arrangement had been my idea. Then I finally told her about the debt. I expected her to be horrified. She was angry, but mostly because I had made a decision for both of us. She said she had never asked me to fund her life or move in. She had asked whether we were partners. We had a very unromantic evening with my banking app open on the table. I showed her the balances and the repayment plan I had been avoiding making. She said she did not want joint finances or to lend me money. I said I would not accept money from her anyway. We agreed that moving in and expensive holidays are not sensible this year. We also agreed that we are together and exclusive. Nothing about my finances changed overnight. I still live with my brother. Last Friday she paid for dinner because it was her turn and I managed not to turn that into a statement about my worth as a man. I understand why people warn against committing when your life is unstable. I also think I used “not ready” to mean “not willing to be seen before I had fixed everything.” She may still decide that my situation does not fit the future she wants. I may discover that paying down debt while being in a relationship is harder than I hope. We have not solved the next five years. We did stop making the word boyfriend carry a mortgage, a perfect salary and a version of me who never needs help. For now, I have a girlfriend and a direct debit. Both feel more real than waiting to become somebody I would finally allow her to choose.
