I want more 1–2 years 20+ The Optimist Secure attachment

They invited me to go to a local pub to meet their friends last Friday. I thought it was a big step after nearly two years of seeing each other. I bought a new top and spent ages getting ready. When I got there, they were already at a table with three other people. I walked over and said hello. The person I was seeing just looked at me and said hey, but did not introduce me to anyone. I ended up standing there for a second before I just pulled up a chair myself. For the rest of the night, I was basically a ghost. They talked to their friends about their week and work and stuff, but never once mentioned who I was or how we knew each other. One of the friends asked them how they knew me, and they just said oh, this is someone I see sometimes. I felt like a stranger sitting in a group of people who all know everything about each other. It made me realise that they still view me as someone they can just keep hidden away, even after all this time. I guess I really thought we were past that part, but clearly I was wrong. Sorry for the essay, I just feel a bit stupid.

Be honest. Be kind. No real names.

Did you talk about it afterwards? I’d want to know whether “someone I see sometimes” was awkwardness because they had no idea how to describe you, or whether that is genuinely how they think of the relationship. Both would hurt, but they’re different problems.

im sorry, that sounds rubbish. you really didnt deserve to be treated like that after so long.

two years and you are still a secret, leave now.

honestly feels like youre being a bit unfair. maybe they were just having a bad night or felt awkward introducing you under pressure, stop overthinking it.

It sounds as though this situation has worn you down. That does not make you foolish or weak, but it may help to focus on the choices available to you now and the boundary you can realistically keep.

“Someone I see sometimes” after nearly two years would have hurt me too. I don’t think this is really about needing a grand relationship announcement. He had an easy opportunity to introduce you in a way that acknowledged you mattered and chose language that made the connection sound tiny.

One awkward evening might not define the entire relationship, so a direct conversation could still be useful. But if being hidden has become a repeated pattern, it is reasonable to ask what the arrangement actually allows rather than dismissing your own reaction.

This broke my heart, honestly. I spent far too long being the person they called only after midnight. You are not stupid for caring, but please do not let the same arrangement keep hurting you.

Honestly, send them a text tomorrow asking for a proper chat about what happened. If they dismiss you or make excuses again, you have your answer. Dont let them drag this out another week while you feel like this.

This brought back memories of being kept secret for years. Hearing somebody minimise a relationship you experienced as important can be devastating. You are not foolish for being affected by it.

Being introduced as “someone I see sometimes” after nearly two years would have hurt me too. The evening gave you clearer information about where they place you in their wider life, even though it was painful information to receive.
